“I want to win the AFCON” – Jose Peseiro fires warning to Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, others
The Super Eagles last won the African Cup of Nations tournament back in 2013, after a lone goal from Sunday Mba sealed the deal against Burkina Faso.
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Vitor Peseiro, has sounded a strong warning to all other countries vying to win the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian National team have adopted “Let’s do it again” as their motto for the tournament as they look to replicate the success of the 2013 team that won the competition.
Peseiro, 63, has also not shied away from the Nigerian theme, sending out a note of warning, that nothing but a win in the tournament’s final will do for him.
The Portuguese tactician, speaking with NFF TV, praised the quality in the squad of the Nigerian team, and mentioned his aim for the team at the AFCON tournament.
“Currently, the Super Eagles have the best attack on the continent, and I have evaluated the players and the situation, and I want to win the AFCON, it’s my goal, my objective,” the former F.C. Porto manager said.
The coach was honest in his proceedings, mentioning he has a foreknowledge that the task before him is no easy feat, but reaffirms he’s willing to put up a fight with the Super Eagles.
“It’s not easy as there are other candidates, as everyone knows. You also need to respect the other national teams and know their strengths, but at the same time, we want to fight to win the AFCON. We also have a difficult group. Some of the teams in our group had a better showing at the last tournament, so we want to do better.”
The Super Eagles were drawn in Group A, alongside the host, Ivory Coast, with Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea completing the list. Nigeria play their first game against Equatorial Guinea in thirteen days.
