Jorge Masvidal opens as big betting favorite over Nate Diaz in rumored boxing match
Jorge Masvidal beat Nate Diaz once before and oddsmakers believe he can do it again.
On Monday, rumors began circulating that Masvidal and Diaz will face each other in a boxing match this March in Las Vegas. And while the fight is not yet official, SportsBetting.ag still dropped odds for the hypothetical matchup with Masvidal coming in as a sizable betting favorite.
Jorge Masvidal: -325
Nate Diaz: +250
The odds imply that Masvidal has a 76.5 percent chance of winning the fight, with a $100 bet on Masvidal returning $30.77. Diaz, meanwhile, has a 28.6 percent chance of winning, and a $100 bet would return $250.
Masvidal was a much smaller betting favorite over Diaz when the two first faced off for the inaugural ‘BMF Championship’ — a title created by Diaz and then co-opted by UFC — at UFC 244 in 2019. Masvidal won that bout by Doctor Stoppage due to a cut at the end of the third round.
After their original fight, Masvidal lost his next four bouts in the UFC, including two failed attempts to claim the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman. He retired last April after coming up short against Gilbert Burns; however, on Jan. 1, Masvidal announced he was “unretired,” seemingly setting up this rumored fight with Diaz.
In contrast, Diaz only fought twice more in the UFC following his loss to Masvidal, losing to Leon Edwards before ending his UFC career by choking out Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279. After that win, Diaz left the UFC to pursue other interests, including a long-rumored boxing match with Jake Paul. That fight finally took place this past August, with Diaz losing a unanimous decision.
