Liverpool and Arsenal have established themselves as Premier League title rivals in recent seasons with Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta now battling it out for supremacy in 2023/24.

Liverpool finally ended their long wait for a Premier League title in 2020, as Klopp’s team lifted the trophy at Anfield, and Arteta has revived Arsenal into genuine challengers.

The duo are determined to challenge Manchester City in the Premier League and the lastest edition of the rivalry took place on Saturday, December 23, as the Reds and the Gunners played out a 1-1 draw that saw Arteta’s men top the table at Christmas.

Klopp and Arteta renewed acquaintances when they faced off in an FA Cup Third Round tie on January 7. The Reds came out on top 2-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal may hold the edge when it comes to Premier League titles, but Liverpool are one of the most storied sides in European football, and history favours the Merseysiders when it comes to silverware. But what about their own head-to-head record?

The Sporting News looks at the results of their previous meetings and compares their respective trophy list.

Liverpool vs Arsenal head to head, all-time resultsIn 241 competitive meetings, Liverpool hold the edge over Arsenal, with 95 wins compared to 82 defeats and 64 draws, stretching all the way back to 1893.

Liverpool’s incredible dominance of the 1970s and 1980s put them on another level to the majority of their rivals with 11 league titles and four European Cups won across the two decades.

The final years of the old First Division, before the inception of the Premier League in 1992, saw the most famous meeting between the two teams.

Arsenal headed to Anfield on the final day of the 1988/89 season needing to complete the ‘impossible’ job of winning away at the defending champions.

Alan Smith’s goal set the stage for an incredible night, and Michael Thomas’ iconic late finish sealed victory for Arsenal to frustrate Liverpool and secure title glory for Arsenal.

— Arsenal (@Arsenal) August 24, 2014Liverpool enjoyed a strong record in their early Premier League clashes with Arsenal, with eight wins from 10 up until 1998.

However, as Arsene Wenger’s team turned into a title force, their record improved, although they famously lost the 2001 FA Cup after Michael Owen’s late double.

Liverpool knocked Arsenal out of the 2008 Champions League before Andrei Arshavin scored four at Anfield the following season.

The most eye-catching recent statistic is Arsenal’s lack of a Premier League win at Anfield since 2012 with Klopp unbeaten at home in league action against Wenger, Unai Emery and Arteta.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal: Who has won the most trophies?Liverpool’s trophy record places them ahead of Arsenal in almost every competition with 19 First Division/Premier League titles compared to Arsenal’s 13.

The Gunners are the most successful team in FA Cup history, with 14 trophy wins, but Liverpool have won nine EFL Cups compared with Arsenal’s two.

Arsenal have famously never won a European Cup/Champions League title, and Liverpool are England’s dominant club in Europe, with six.

Liverpool and Arsenal major trophies wonLiverpool vs Arsenal biggest ever wins, defeatsArsenal’s biggest win over Liverpool was a 6-0 victory in the First Division back in November 1931. Liverpool got their revenge three years later, defeating the Gunners 8-1 at Anfield in what remains the biggest margin of victory between these sides.

The highest-scoring league match between Liverpool and Arsenal came in a 6-3 win for the Gunners in March 1928.

That nine-goal haul was matched by that 8-1 win at Anfield back in 1934, and Arsenal’s 6-3 EFL Cup victory on Merseyside in January 2007, with Julio Baptista scoring four at Anfield.

However, the overall record was increased in 2019 in an outrageous 5-5 Anfield draw in the EFL Cup, as Klopp’s team eventually won via a penalty shootout.

Arshavin’s quartet of goals in 2009 was part of the highest-scoring Premier League game between the pair — a 4-4 draw on Merseyside.
