Luke Humphries throws darts with Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street after PDC World Championship triumph

The world no.1 came from behind to beat 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler 7-4 at Alexandra Palace and win the title for the first time in his career.

Humphries broke down in emotion after he hit a double eight to seal the win to cap off his best ever appearance at the tournament.

His efforts clearly caught of the eye of Sunak, who invited him to 10 Downing Street to talk about his journey to glory.

“You’ve inspired millions,” the Prime Minister told the new world champion in a video he shared on Instagram. “I mean your personal story is incredible, it really is.”

Humphries then went on to talk about his battles with mental health having previously considered quitting after suffering crippling anxiety and panic attacks.

He remarked: “Honestly four years ago, I went through mental health things, where anxiety was something that was a struggle for me.

“I was just hoping that I’d be a little bit of an inspiration for the public.”

Commending him, Sunak stated: “Anyone going through any difficulty in their life will be able to look at you and actually hear the courage in which you talk about it in the first place.”

They both then went to a different room where low and behold, there was a darts board set up for them, with Sunak first to throw.

He didn’t seem to fancy his chances, but hit 12 with his opening dart, with Humphries describing it as ‘perfect’.

Sunak then hit 17 before his third dart landed just below a triple three, with Humphries going on to show him how it’s done.

The new world champion saw all his darts hitting the 20, with two of them appearing to land as triples for a score of 140.

Sunak had another attempt and certainly improved, but it’s clear that Humphries is much more skilled behind the oche.

Speaking to the PA news agency following their meeting, ‘Cool Hand’ said: “It is a privilege of course, these are not things you get to do every day, it was a privilege to be invited, this is massive for our sport.

“I have got a duty as the flagbearer of darts at the moment. We just talked about sport, nothing else really.

“He wanted to congratulate me on the success, he enjoyed the game and it really is important for figures to be coming in and enjoying our sport.”
