At least 263 children were reunited with their caregivers in Cape Town over the festive season, after being separated while spending a day at the beach with their families.

This was a reduction from the previous festive season, where 369 children were reunited with their families, said the City’s Community Services and Health MMC Patricia van der Ross.

From 15 December to 1 January, the IdentiKidz programme – a project that aims to promote the safety of children at beaches by tagging them with a band containing their caregiver’s details – tagged 85 916 children at various beaches, compared with 92 765 children who were tagged during the same period in 2022/23.
