Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe faces the prospect of becoming one of the first SA judges to be removed from office. Karyn Maughan writes that he has again shown why – by using a television interview to praise himself and bash his accusers.
In a recent e.tv interview with Annika Larsen, Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe sought to present himself as a judicial prodigy who had only faced accusations of improper, dishonest and abusive conduct because he published a 43-page “racism report” in 2004.
Alongside so-called “drunk judge” Nkola Motata, he faces the prospect of becoming one of the first judges in South Africa to be removed from office after being found guilty of impeachable gross misconduct for trying to sway Constitutional Court justices Bess Nkabinde and Chris Jafta to rule in favour of then ANC president Jacob Zuma in 2008.
