The PSL transfer window promises to have a few interesting sagas in January, and now Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu could be locked in a captivating negotiation for a player swap, according to insiders privy to information.
At the heart of this transfer story lies Tshegofatso Mabasa, the Moroka Swallows striker, and Riaan Hanamub, the Namibian left-back from Usuthu.

Siya sources have indicated that Pirates are long admirers of Hanamub, and may see an opportunity to finally reel him in. Usuthu, on the other hand, are keen on Pirates’ Mabasa, currently on loan at Swallows.
The Siya crew had previously discussed AmaZulu’s potential interest on Soccer Laduma, but now could a player swap be the answer to both their desires?
“This is not the first time that Pirates are interested in Hanamub. You can recall they inquired about him at the start of the season but nothing really happened. Now with AmaZulu interested in Mabasa, Pirates want to use that as bait to get Hanamub from AmaZulu,” said the Siya source.
AmaZulu may hold a trump card, though. Their interest in Mabasa, and a swap deal hinges on their call for Hanamub.
“It will all depend on what AmaZulu really wants to do at the end of the day because they are interested in Mabasa right now. So the swap deal would be on the cards. It will also depend whether money will be involved or just a player swap which is very rare,” the source told Soccer Laduma.

But Swallows, Mabasa’s temporary home, could add another layer of complexity to the story, as a second Siya source discusses.
“You know if he leaves now that would disturb Swallows. And it will depend on their initial agreement with Pirates. You remember they also showed interest of recalling him from the loan when they were struggling with goals? Will they be able to pull him out from the loan deal and then sell him to AmaZulu? Those are the talks currently going on and let’s wait for January to see the outcome as Hanamub will be going to AFCON with Namibia at the moment,” the source concluded.
With the Africa Cup of Nations looming, Hanamub will probably be unavailable until later in January. But the transfer talk, could rumble on.
Soccer Laduma contacted AmaZulu for comment but no response was received while this story was prepared. January promises to be a month of twists and turns for transfers, and the Mabasa-for-Hanamub saga is just the first act.
